Art Appreciation

Artists are unique. Their vision, their drive, their heart — all different from one to the next. Artists have the ability to evoke emotion from the people that are looking at their work, reading their work, listening to their work. Oftentimes, the reactions are extremely powerful. Some powerfully positive and some powerfully negative. I personally don’t have to agree with an artist’s lifestyle or politics to appreciate their art or to spend money on it. I am appreciating or buying the art, not the persons beliefs, lifestyle, or politics.

Let’s take Banksy for example. Here is what Wikipedia has to say about him:

Banksy is an anonymous England-based graffiti artist, political activist and film director of unverified identity. Their satirical street art and subversive epigrams combine dark humour with graffiti executed in a distinctive stenciling technique. Banksy’s works of political and social commentary have been featured on streets, walls, and bridges of cities throughout the world.

Two of my favorite images by Banksy are below.

Now, some say that he’s nothing but a hood and his artwork is nothing but graffiti. That is their right. I personally believe that the work he puts out there is beautiful and has a powerful message behind it. Call it what you will, his message is getting across and that is what he aims to do. He has also racked in a hefty amount of cash seeing that he is with about 20 million according to Wikipedia.

So what do you think? Do you have to agree with an artists politics or cause in order to support them or do you enjoy art that speaks to you no matter who it’s from or what it may represent?

I would love to hear what you think in the comments.

As always,
